Is Teeth Whitening Really Safe? – Dental Care

How to Keep your Teeth & Gums Healthy

Hypertension for years has been known as the silent killer because most people that have high blood pressure are not aware they have the disease. The same can hold true for periodontal disease which is also known for not showing tell tale signs of it until it has advanced to the stage where you are losing your teeth.

The warning signs are there which includes bleeding, tender and swollen gums while brushing, flossing and eating hard food. When your gums began receding or pulling away from your teeth it’s time for one of those dreaded trips to the dentist. If left unattended plaque will spread and grow below the gum line. The toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque will stimulate an inflammatory response in which the body turns on itself. The tissues and bone that support the teeth are broken down and destroyed.

The gums begin separating from the teeth, forming pockets (spaces between the teeth and gums) that become infected. As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen and more gum tissue and bone are destroyed. Eventually, the teeth become loose and may have to be removed.

Most consumers are not aware what represents a natural shade of white for teeth. The users may not be able to comprehend when too white is too much. They continue to bleach their teeth because they believe their teeth are not white enough or they are working hard at maintaining the whiteness. The user doesn’t comprehend that the shade of white they are wearing on their teeth may be unbecoming instead of having the flattering effects they are seeking.

  • Some consumers compare their smile with their favorite actress or magazine model and naturally assume their smile is bright because they’ve had their teeth bleached. Unfortunately, some of those smiles are ‘air brushed’ to appear very white. In some cases, the person’s smile may not have been altered by teeth whitening, but dental work instead. Most over the counter products cannot provide such a dramatic change in the color of someone’s teeth.
  • Despite these concerns, there is still little evidence to support that teeth whitening is unsafe. The products are formulated to be gentle and safe. However, a word of caution, there are side effects. If the user leaves the product on beyond the allotted time or chooses to bleach their teeth after every meal instead of adhering to the usage recommendations, the risk of using the product includes damaging dental enamel, developing cavities and tooth sensitivity.
