Suggestion:
It is very possible. The dentist sees something on the x-ray that determines that a root canal needs to be done. It is called a fistula and is like an abscess. When this is present, a root canal must be done, even if you are not in pain.
Nerves go bad on teeth sometimes for no apparent reason. But once this happens, a root canal is necessary in order to save the tooth.
If you are not in pain, you can elect to forgo treatment until you start to have pain. But keep in mind that you may someday wake up with a swollen face and be in severe pain with no warning. And what if that happens when you are away from home or on a weekend when your dentist is not available?

Is the tooth bothering you? Is it sensitive to hot or cold? Can you chew on it without pain? If the answers to these questions are yes then you probably need a root canal. I am putting off getting one myself and I answer yes to all of the above questions. Mine is the last molar on the bottom left so it is a little easier to not use that side and keep hot/cold foods and drinks away from it.
My dentist doesn't do root canals so that means finding someone to do it. I have had one before and it was not a pleasant experience.
