Recovery After Dental Surgery?

I'm having minor dental surgery this week in which the dentist will be cutting the gum to access the root of a tooth. What can I expect following the surgery? How long will I have to avoid drinking and eating? I plan on running in a 5K race two days afterwards, will I have to avoid physical exertion following the surgery?

Suggestion:

Rest, especially in the hours following the surgery. Try to stick to fluids and soft foods(like canned pears or pasta) until the stiffness fades. There will be a LOT of swelling, but keeping ice on for 15-30 minute intervals is what was recommended to me.

I can't really give much advice when it comes to your race, but I would sit it out. This is something you should ask your dentist about. If you are involved in any sort of contact sport, I'd suggest taking a three-week break at the minimum. I know it sounds drastic, but I had three impacted teeth pulled a month ago, and I still received a knot on my lower jaw during sparring on Wednesday.

Oh, and one other thing: within a week or so, it is a good idea to begin exercising your jaw in order to keep the scar tissue from limiting the movement.
