Why Do We Purposefully Inflict Pain on Ourselves with Previous Injuries?

For example, if your arm is sore (I don't know about you, but this is what I do) you'll want to feel the pain. If your finger hurts, you press on it to relieve the pain. If your tooth hurts, you try to make it stop by pushing against it with your other teeth. Why do we do that?

Suggestion:

You're either trying to worsen the pain, so that by itself it won't seem so bad, or, just trying to make yourself get used to it.
I've thought about this before also, it's a very good question!

If you cause pain somewhere else on your body (more effective if near or surrounding it) the body will most likely forget about the original pain or lessen it by focusing on the new self-caused pain which is usually not anywhere near as bad as the original.

idk about the arm thing cauz i dnt do that haha but the tooth …i think itz becauz itz vry annoying i think u jst want to try to make a stop, but it use to feel good to push in on a loose tooth wen i was smaller haha :D good question

I think you said it yourself – to relieve the pain or try to make it stop?
