Wisdom Teeth and Pain Meds?

I had all 4 of mine extracted today, and the oral surgeon gave me Tylenol with codeine for pain. I don't like codeine, because it makes me very tired and inattentive.

Can I use Aleve (Naproxen) instead?

Suggestion:

No!!
Naproxen is an anti-inflamitory, like Ibuprofan and Asprin! This will delay the formation of the scab over your sockets!
Use just plain Tylenol if you cannot handle the codeine, however the use of opiates, such as codeine, actually HELPS the healing process by making you relaxed – and thus not tensing your jaw. If it's within 24-48 hours of your surgery, I HIGHLY SUGGEST you take the meds! You're supposed to be tired and inattentive. You're healing. Give yourself a break! Relaxing is best for your body right now.

If you do take Tylenol, don't take it in addition to your medication, because you'll be taking too high a dose of the acetaminophen, which can cause big-time liver problems. Wait to switch to plain Tylenol atleast four hours after your last dose with the Tylenol & codeine Rx, and I'd call your dentist to see if you can switch to Vicoden or Percocet if you really can't tolerate the codeine.
